Gate to Gate
Gate to Gate · Head of the Charles

The animated race analyzer.

Drop the GPS file from your SpeedCoach or CoxBox and read your race: the line on the river, the time through every gate, your fastest and slowest 500, and where your time sits against every boat that has raced your event since 2012. Free, nothing to download, no login.

  1. Get the fileOn the SpeedCoach or CoxBox, sync the race to the NK LiNK app, open the workout and export it as a CSV. Email it to yourself or save it to your phone.
  2. Drop it belowPick the course and the boat class, then drop the file on the box or tap it to choose. It stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded unless you post it.
  3. Read the raceThe app finds the start line and the finish line in the track itself, so it does not matter when the box was switched on. Press play, click a gate to fly to it, hover the chart.
  4. Compare and shareAgainst the field puts your time in every year's results. Pick your event and bow to post your line to the results page, and download the race card.

For your own curiosity and your crew's. Nothing here changes, challenges or replaces an official result; the regatta's clock and the regatta's umpires are the record.

Drop your CSV file here The CSV export from NK LiNK. It stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded until you say so.

How do I get the file off my SpeedCoach or CoxBox?

Through NK's LiNK Logbook (the app on your phone, or the desktop one). Sync the SpeedCoach GPS or CoxBox GPS so the session appears in the Workout Log, tick the session, choose Export, pick CSV, then Save. Upload that file exactly as it came: do not open it in Excel or Numbers and save it again, because that changes the timestamps and the page can no longer time your race. The file holds every stroke; the race is found inside it from the start and finish lines, so it does not matter how long before or after you were recording. A .fit export from the same app works too, though the CSV carries finer timing.

Gate to gate

From start is how far into the course each gate sits; the leg is the stretch from the previous gate to it. Pink is metres you rowed on that leg that the reference line didn't; green is metres you saved. Click a gate to fly to it and see which arch you took.

How it works

The page knows where the Head of the Charles start line and finish line are. It reads the GPS track in your file, finds the moment your boat crosses each line, and times and measures the race between them. The button on the box does not matter. For the cleanest result, start the CoxBox or SpeedCoach well before the start line and stop it after you are through the finish; if the box was started late or stopped early, the page estimates the missing few metres at your own speed and says so in the notes. The gates are calibrated against official race times to within half a second. This is for interest and training only: it is not official timing and it does not overrule, dispute or replace any result published by the regatta.
